Common tax traps
The ones most people don't see until it's too late
TaxLens flags common UK tax inefficiencies based on your PAYE income profile.

The £100k trap

Personal allowance tapers to zero between £100k–£125,140. Effective rate: 60%.

Pension relief gap

Higher-rate taxpayers can reclaim 40% on contributions. It doesn't happen automatically.

Bonus sacrifice

A cash bonus is fully taxed. Via pension sacrifice, you often keep significantly more.

Child benefit taper

Above £60k, child benefit is clawed back. Above £80k, it's gone entirely.

ISA deadline

£20k annual ISA allowance resets April 5th. Unused allowance is lost permanently.

Gift Aid uplift

Donations via Gift Aid reduce adjusted net income — potentially below the £100k threshold.

Why we built this I used to spend hours googling my own tax position — jumping between HMRC pages, salary calculators, Reddit and YouTube — never getting a clear picture. TaxLens exists to give you that clarity in minutes, at a fraction of the cost of an accountant visit.

About

Why TaxLens exists

This isn't a corporate about page. It's an honest explanation of the problem we're trying to solve, what TaxLens is, and what it isn't.

01 — The problem

UK tax is complicated. Finding clear answers shouldn't be.

If you're a UK professional earning a reasonable salary, you probably know there are things you could be doing better with your tax position. But actually understanding how they apply to your specific income picture usually means an afternoon of this:

After all of that, most people still don't have a joined-up picture of their own income and tax position.

02 — Why TaxLens exists

One place. Plain English. Your numbers.

TaxLens was created to make UK tax concepts easier to understand — through educational simulations, plain-English explanations, and calculations based on publicly available HMRC rules.

03 — What TaxLens is not

We think being clear about this matters.

TaxLens does not provide
  • Financial advice or regulated financial planning
  • Investment recommendations of any kind
  • Recommendations of specific pension providers, funds or products
  • Suitability assessments for your personal circumstances
  • Tax return preparation or filing services
TaxLens does provide
  • Educational simulations based on publicly available HMRC tax rules
  • Illustrative estimates of tax, take-home and common planning scenarios
  • Plain-English explanations of common UK tax concepts
  • Awareness of thresholds, deadlines and common tax traps

04 — How it started

An honest origin story.

TL
TaxLens founder
UK tech professional
"TaxLens started after spending far too many hours trying to understand my own adjusted net income, pension contributions and the £100k tax trap using fragmented online resources. I was bouncing between HMRC pages, salary calculators, Reddit threads and YouTube videos — each one answering a slightly different question, none of them giving me a clear picture of where I actually stood. I knew I was probably missing something. I just didn't know what."

Built by a UK tech professional with direct experience of PAYE income, pension planning confusion, and the specific frustration of trying to understand a complex tax position across multiple fragmented sources.

05 — Where we're going

A simple goal.

Our goal is to help UK earners better understand their income and tax position before making financial decisions — or before walking into a conversation with an accountant or adviser.

Not to replace professional advice. Not to manage anyone's money. Just to make the starting point less confusing and less expensive than it currently is.

If any of this sounds familiar — the googling, the fragmented answers, the vague sense that you're missing something — TaxLens was built for you.
